Margaret P. Battin to speak at Seymour Riklin lecture Sept. 16

Margaret P. Battin will be the featured speaker for the second annual Seymour Riklin Memorial Lecture at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in room 110 of the Kresge Auditorium in Purdy/Kresge Library at Wayne State University.

Battin will discuss "Sex and Consequences: Global Population Growth and Reproductive Rights." She will be introduced by Bruce Russell, WSU professor of philosophy.

Battin, who is professor of philosophy at the University of Utah, also is adjunct professor in the division of medical ethics in the school of medicine.

Lawrence Lombard, chairman of the WSU department of philosophy, says "The series is designed to offer serious philosophical talks on issues of general interest and appeal in a venue that is easily accessible to the public."

The series honors Seymour Riklin, a WSU professor of humanities, who died in 1996. Riklin often was called a "Renaissance man" by members of the metropolitan Detroit community. He was known for his extensive teaching and cultural activities.

On the program will be another speaker, Saul Wineman, known professionally as Paul Winter, who will offer remarks about his friend, Riklin. The lecture is open to the public. For more information call (313) 577-4583 or e-mail L.B.Lombard@wayne.edu.
