Educational innovations offered by WSU Whole Schooling Institute, June 22-24

Educators and community members have an invitation to a learning adventure at Wayne State University.

A Whole Schooling Summer Institute begins with a 11 a.m. registration Tuesday, June 22, in the David Adamany Undergraduate Library and ends with a 4-5 p.m. social hour Thursday, June 24, in the Faculty Administration Building.

The program includes presentations by internationally recognized educators, teams from innovative Michigan schools and Detroit neighborhood leaders.

Featured presenters are:
  • Randi Douglas and Josh White, Jr., nationally recognized folk singer, performing in Storyliving;
  • Pat Shannon, author of Becoming Political and Reading Poverty and known internationally as a leader in the areas of whole language and critical pedagogy;
  • Mara Sapon-Shevin of Syracuse University, author of Because We Can Change the World, and nationally recognized for building cooperative, inclusive classroom communities for young children;
  • George Smith, Chicago teacher and editor of Substance, who has challenged standardized testing in that city; and
  • Wayne Ross, professor at State University of New York at Binghamton, editor of Teaching and Research in Social Studies, the leading U. S. social studies journal, and co- founder of the Rouge Forum.
The institute has an interactive format, encouraging participants to listen, dialogue and learn. It focuses on the five principles of whole schooling - to empower citizens in a democracy, to include everyone, to teach and adapt for diversity, to build community and support learning, and to create partnerships between families and the community.

The Rouge Forum, Eastside Detroit Whole Schooling Cluster and Whole Schooling Consortium are institute co-sponsors with the WSU College of Education.

For registration, schedule, and hotel information call the college at (313) 577-0986 or fax at (313) 577-4091.
