Emerald Sinfonietta plans concert and Wayne State benefit June 6

The Emerald Sinfonietta plans a "Summer in the City- Swingtime" concert to celebrate the Duke Ellington centennial and benefit department of music at Wayne State University. The event begins with pre-concert cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a Silent Auction at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, in the Scarab Club, 217 Farnsworth.

The musical program follows at 3 p.m. with selections by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, George Gershwin and the sounds of the swing era. Other scheduled performers are Ron Kischuk, Jazz Detroit and guest conductor Robert Maniscalco.

The sinfonietta is a 25-piece chamber orchestra drawn from members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, (DSO). It fosters live music in the community and showcases contemporary compositions, many by local artists, as well as traditional and classical music. Conductor Felix Resnick is a violinist in the DSO and conductor of both the Birmingham-Bloomfield Symphony and the Grosse Pointe Symphony.

Members in the group have a Wayne State affiliation either as alumni, faculty or supporters. Music arums, Richard and Candice Wallace serve as honorary chairs for the event. They encourage a separate $10 donation to the WSU department of music and offer donors a complimentary ticket to a future performance.

The sinfonietta functions as a community outreach, nonprofit organization which benefits area needy organizations. Another fund-raising effort offers a celebrity cookbook, Emerald Cauldron, which features favorite and hard-to-find recipes from DSO musicians and former WQRS-FM on-air personalities including Charles Greenwell and Davis Gloff.

Concert tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. For more information call (313) 438-0780.
