Join the Wayne State University Alumni Association at the Woodward Avenue Brewers (WAB) in Ferndale as they explore the history and tastes of Detroit-area breweries. The Recent Alumni Committee will host a beer tasting at WAB at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 20.
WAB is a family-owned microbrewery started by Chris Johnston, his wife Krista, and his brother Grant. The brewery tapped its first keg in May 1997. The first beer poured, Custom Porter, quickly became the cornerstone of their brewery as it won critical acclaim at the 1997 Rivertown Beer-Fest.
The beer-tasting activities will begin as Grant Johnston, head brewer, leads a guided tasting of several specially brewed beers. He will then direct guests through a tour of the facility, explaining the intricacies of the brewing process. After the tour participants will enjoy pints of their favorite brew while author Peter Blum provides a historical account of the brewery industry based on his recently published book, Brewed in Detroit.
Registration fees are $22 for members of the WSU Alumni Association and $25 for non-members. The fee includes several samplings of beer, three pints of your favorite brews and gourmet appetizers. In addition, each participant will receive a Woodward Avenue Brewers logo pint glass and work shirt.
