A new website allows graduating students and alumni to check out job openings with employers who participate in the Michigan Jobs Consortium through Wayne State, Oakland University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Web page users have 24-hour access to available positions that are posted for about a month. Although a few of the jobs posted are at the participating universities, the majority of the positions are with corporations that normally recruit at the schools.
Employers can post the jobs on the site themselves (after they are approved by the schools) or send the information to one of the universities and have the information input there, according to Cynthia Redwine, associate director of counseling and placement services at WSU.
"When jobs are entered online with the consortium the information goes on all three university web pages," she said. "They appear within 48 hours and remain posted for 30 days unless an alternate deadline is given. The jobs are full-or part-time professional positions, usually requiring a four-year degree but anyone can use the site."
On a recent day nearly 640 jobs were listed. Positions are broken down by type of work so prospective employees can click on their areas of interest and see what is available, rather than scrolling through postings that do not apply to their area of expertise.
The site can be viewed at any computer with an Internet connection but several computers are available in the placement office in 1001 Faculty-Administration Building. Students can stop in between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.
"Most of the jobs posted are in this area but we hope to expand to other schools in six months or so to reach other parts of the state," Redwine said. "The market has been good and employers are looking for as many applicants as they can get."
The site can be accessed at www.sa.wayne.edu/ Click on "employment opportunities." No password is needed to check out the offerings.
