Lecture to focus on African-American health concerns

Dr. Lawrence Crane, director of the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University HIV/AIDS program, will be the guest speaker at a 6 p.m. lecture Monday, April 5, in the Community Arts Auditorium at WSU.

Throughout his career Crane has specialized in infectious diseases with a special emphasis on HIV/AIDS. His presentation will cover the natural history of AIDS, current updates on what is known about the virus and treatment of it with protease inhibitors.

Crane has received many AIDS-related awards including honors from the Dionne Warwick Foundation for his work; a Community Service Award from the AIDS Consortium of Southeastern Michigan; and was designated as the leading Detroit-area HIV/AIDS clinician by Detroit Monthly magazine.

The lecture is sponsored by the WSU departments of anthropology and occupational therapy and is part of a series designed to educate the public about the devastating effects of AIDS in the African-American community.

According to the Michigan AIDS Fund:

* AIDS is the No. 1 killer of African-Americans ages 25-44; and

* African-Americans are 13 percent of the nation's population but accounted for 57 percent of all new HIV infections last year.

The lecture is free and open to the public. The Community Arts Auditorium is located at 450 Reuther Mall. For more information call the College of Liberal Arts at (313) 577-2522.
