Wayne State president to receive award from Howard University

Wayne State University President Irvin D. Reid will be honored by his alma mater, Howard University, in Washington, D.C., March 6 for outstanding achievements in education and administration. Reid will receive a 1999 Alumni Award for Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement. The presentation will be made during the university's Charter Day Dinner to be held at the Washington Hilton and Towers.

The annual event commemorates the approval of Howard's charter by U.S. President Andrew Johnson in 1867. The university uses the occasion to honor alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers.

Reid, who holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Howard and taught marketing as a faculty member there in the late 1970s, has received many academic, humanitarian and service awards over the years from various universities and organizations. These include the Blue Key Service Award and the Golden Key Award from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he was dean of the School of Business Administration.

He also has received awards from the Alpha Society, Beta Gamma Sigma and Omicron Delta Epsilon at UT-Chattanooga in addition to an award from the Alpha Kappa Psi Business Society at Montclair State University, where he was president before coming to Wayne State. He also was awarded the Austrian-American Medal for exceptional service in promoting international understanding, global education and advancement of individual human potential.

Reid, who holds a master's degree and a doctorate in business and applied economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and an executive certificate in educational management from Harvard University, became Wayne State's ninth president in November 1997.
