Center for Judaic Studies at WSU plans 10th anniversary celebration

An international conference focusing on "Jews and the Urban Experience" is among activities planned in conjunction with the 10th anniversary celebration of Wayne State University's Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies, March 7-8.

The activities, which will include two evening programs and one daylong discussion program, will begin with a bus tour of Jewish Detroit at 2:15 p.m. Sunday, March 7.

Harvard University Professor and author Nathan Glazer will deliver the keynote address for the conference at 7:30 p.m. March 7 at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills. A reception will follow. Admission is free and open to the public.

Daytime sessions will begin Monday, March 8, with registration and continental breakfast at 8:15 a.m. in Wayne State's McGregor Memorial Conference Center. Scholars will discuss many aspects of the Jewish experience in urban areas in the United States and abroad. Special emphasis will be placed on the Jewish community of Detroit, which this year celebrates its 100th anniversary of organized Jewish life.

David Adamany, former WSU president, and Sanford Cohen, former WSU provost, will be among those honored at a reception and banquet to be held at 6 p.m. March 8 in Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills. Also to be honored are George M. Zeltzer and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. Tickets are required.

The closing session for the conference will follow at 8:15 p.m. at the synagogue, with Jeffrey Shandler of New York University giving a multimedia presentation on "The Urban Jewish Landscape in Television." David Weinberg, director of the Cohn-Haddow Center, will deliver closing remarks.

Admission for the Sunday bus tour and the Monday conference and lunch at WSU is $50, or for the conference and lunch alone, $35. For more information and reservations call the center at (313) 577-2679.
