Members of the Wayne State University community soon will have one less excuse for not keeping fit

The campus fitness center proposed by President Irvin D. Reid shortly after his arrival just over a year ago is one step closer to becoming reality with the Board of Governors' Jan. 28 approval of plans for an 80,000-square-footfitness center.

The budgeted amount for the new facility is $15 million, with 75 percent, or $11.25 million, expected to come from state appropriations. The remaining amount ($3.75 million) would be paid by the university through bond sale or private contributions. Last December, the Michigan Legislature passed and Gov. John Engler signed the capital outlay budget bill authorizing the planning for the fitness center; final funding is contingent on the planning and programming receiving legislative support and approval.

"The new center will provide education, research and exercise facilities for the entire campus community," Engler said. "It provides a venue for the students, faculty and staff to develop and maintain health habits which contribute to the total quality of life."

Plans call for the center be built on Gullen Mall between the Student Center and the Purdy-Kresge Libraries. It will include:

* A two-court gymnasium;

* A suspended walking/jogging track;

* An aerobics studio;

* A seminar room;

* A multi-purpose area;

* A rock-climbing wall; and

* A leisure pool.

University officials say that in addition to motivating healthy lifestyles, the center will help create an environment that motivates students to remain on campus after classes, and in the process promote a positive university experience.
