Valentine's Day is Sunday, Feb. 14
Did you know . . .
You must plant onions on Valentine's Day?
Corn should be planted on Valentine's Day to get good ears?
If it rains on Valentine's Day, your chickens will stop laying eggs?
The story of Valentine's Day begins in the third century with an oppressive Roman emperor and a humble Christian martyr. The emperor was Claudius II. The Christian was Valentinus. To continue the story, don't bother reading the book. Call us. Wayne State's Folklore Archive has information on Valentine history and superstition in addition to the hearts and flowers romance traditionally associated with the day. Take your pick - Feb. 16 is Pancake Day, Fat Tuesday or Paczki Day
The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which begins the fast of the Lenten season, has many traditions. The Polish enjoy Paczki (Poonch-key) Day, named for the jelly-filled yeast doughnuts. It is a day of high festival and merriment. Richard Raspa of the College of Lifelong Learning can tell you about other traditions of the day. This is not a Polish joke.
