Suspect surrenders in campus shooting; President expresses grief for university community

A suspect in the murder of a Wayne State University engineering professor walked into an Ann Arbor police station at about 1:30 a.m. and confessed to shooting Professor Andrzej Olbrot, a professor of electrical engineering at Wayne since 1988. The suspect's identity has not been released.

The shooting occurred at about 7:20 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, in Professor Olbrot's classroom in Old Main as he was administering a final exam to 15 students.

No students were injured. The gunman shot Professor Olbrot several times and fled the scene.

Emergency medical technicians transported Professor Olbrot to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Wayne State University President Irvin D. Reid expressed shock and grief over the incident.

"I speak for the entire Wayne State University community when I say how deeply saddened we are by this terrible tragedy. Professor Olbrot was an expert in control systems who devoted much time to his students and to their success. I wish to express my sympathy to Professor Olbrot's family. Their well being is in our hearts and in our prayers, and we will assist them in every way that we can."

"We also want to assure our students that counselors will be on hand today at various campus buildings and counseling will be provided to students and others as long as needed."

"This was a senseless tragedy, the reason for which we may never fully understand. What is certain is that we must continue to study and work, we must go on, and to remember Professor Olbrot in our thoughts and in our hearts."

The university has established counseling sessions for students, faculty and staff who may wish to talk about the incident. Please call (313) 577-2840 for a counseling referral.
