Hudson's implosion leads to WSU's football gain

The football program at Wayne State University stands to gain from the recent implosion of the Hudson's building.

Homrich Wrecking Inc. of Detroit, which worked on the demolition of the building Oct. 24, has made authenticated and certified bricks available to several charities including Wayne State.

Roger Homrich has supplied Hudson's bricks to the university to raise funds for the football program. Homrich's son, Tim, is on the WSU football team.

Team members have manned a booth outside the athletic office from after the last home game on Saturday, Oct. 31, through Thursday, Nov. 5, each taking an hour's duty offering the bricks for a $5 donation.

Distributing the bricks brought an unexpected bonus to the team members. As the donors picked up the bricks, they shared with the young men their memories of the Hudson's building, years of memories in many cases.

Lisa McCoy of the sports information office says that about 600 bricks had been given out by Thursday afternoon for a total of $3,000 in donations.

Each brick come with a certificate of authenticity. The bricks will be available to history collectors, football fans and all other interested parties for an unlimited time by contacting the football office at (313) 577-4288.
