Wayne State University School of Medicine doctors continue to be held in high esteem by their peers, according to the latest list of "Best Doctors in America - 1999." The list, which appeared in the September 29 edition of the Detroit Free Press, included the names of about 900 Michigan physicians who are considered the best in their field by their colleagues. Of these, 230 of the physicians listed, or 26 percent, are faculty members of the Wayne State University School of Medicine. School of Medicine alumni appeared 169 times, for a total of 19 percent of the Michigan list.
The list reflects the results of 35,000 phone calls to top doctors throughout the United States. The doctors who made the final cut are those who have earned the consensus of their peers from institutions other than their own. The results are compiled and maintained in database form by Woodward/White Inc. of Aiken, SC. Previous lists appeared in the books "Best Doctors in the Midwest."
The list primarily encompasses specialty care areas but also includes primary care doctors such as pediatricians, and internal medicine and family physicians. The majority of the Wayne State doctors that appear are affiliated with The Detroit Medical Center.
Wayne State University is the largest single-campus medical school in the country. The School, which serves as the academic institution of The Detroit Medical Center, is nationally and regionally respected for research and treatment programs in a number of areas, including the neurosciences, oncology and women's and children's health.
