Michael A. Herbert has assumed the position of Chief Administrative Officer for the Wayne State University School of Medicine effective September 8. He comes to WSU from University of Michigan where he served as director of administration for the department of surgery and associate director of surgical services at U-M Hospitals since 1991.
Prior to his career in the academic arena, Mr. Herbert spent 13 years in health care administration at Veterans Administration hospitals across the country, ultimately rising to the rank of associate deputy director of the VA's Central Region, and acting director of the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center.
"I am very confident that we will all benefit greatly from Mike Herbert's leadership, expertise and skills," said Dr. Robert J. Sokol, Wayne State Dean of Medicine.
An alumnus of the University of Vermont, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees, Mr. Herbert was doctoral candidate at the University of Virginia when he was recruited to serve as a consultant on Department of Defense projects.
He is a member of professional and medical management associations including the Academic Practice Assembly of the Medical Group Management Association. He has been awarded extensively throughout his career in the public sector, and is a four-time recipient of the VA Special Contribution Award, a four-time recipient of the Director's Commendation.
Michael Herbert resides in Ann Arbor.
