Dance to the 'big band' sound at Wayne State's Inaugural Concert

The Inaugural Concert honoring President Irvin D. and Pamela Trotman Reid is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, in the Community Arts Auditorium at Wayne State University.

Dennis Tini, professor and chairman of the music department, has arranged an evening of musical treasures.

The concert will offer an opportunity for dancing in the gallery as well as enjoying opera, chamber music and jazz performances by WSU music faculty, alumni and students and members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

The concert will open with an organ prelude by Buxtehude played by Norah Duncan IV, followed by a piano trio. Robert Conway and two graduate students will play "Suite for Violin, Clarinet and Piano" by Milhaud.

Soprano Frances Brockington will sing, "I'll Make the Mountain Kneel," composed by James Hartway with words by John Reed of the English department faculty.

Excerpts from Puccini's "La Boheme" will conclude the first half of the concert and lead into the Champagne Reception where Kypros Markou will direct a string ensemble.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by April Arabian Tini, will open the second half with a variety of selections followed by the Jazz Lab Band I, led by Matt Michaels.

The band will feature international artists Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, and George "Sax" Benson on saxophone. The band will continue its "big band" sound for dancing in the gallery.

Business attire is suggested for the concert, which has limited seating. Reservations are needed. Call (313) 577-2275 for more information.
