Former U.S. Rep. Patricia Schroeder to speak at Wayne State Sept. 15 on volunteerism

Patricia Schroeder, former U.S. representative from Colorado, will deliver the 1998 Helen L. DeRoy/Josephine Weiner Volunteerism Lecture in Wayne State University's McGregor Memorial Conference Center at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15. Her topic will be "Volunteerism: A Lifetime Pursuit."

The event is part of a week-long celebration that will mark the inauguration of WSU President Irvin D. Reid. Registration and a complimentary continental breakfast begin at 8:15 a.m.

A tireless advocate for social justice and equal opportunity as well as children's education and welfare, Schroeder served 12 terms (1972-96) in the House of Representatives. Following Schroeder's remarks, a panel of distinguished professionals who are active in volunteerism will have a roundtable discussion on the life stages of volunteerism. Among the panel members will be Lloyd Reuss, former president of General Motors Corp., who is a volunteer executive at Focus: Hope's Center for Advanced Technologies.

The annual lecture program is sponsored by WSU's College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs and its College of Lifelong Learning. Admission is free and reservations are requested. Call (313) 577-4595 for more information and a registration form.
