Wayne State University begins a new tradition in September with its first New Student Convocation planned for Sept. 2 on the university campus.
The event begins at 1 p.m. in the General Lectures Building and will feature an address from President Irvin D. Reid, an introduction of executive officers and deans, and motivational comments by math Professor Steven Kahn. The WSU Marching Band will perform.
Traffic will be blocked off on Anthony Wayne Drive after the formal presentation and the executive officers, deans and departmental chairpersons - clad in colorful caps and gowns - will form two lines across the street through which the students will pass to reach the Adamany Undergraduate Library.
The Wayne Festi-Fall Picnic will be set up on the back lot of the library. A 100-foot- long submarine sandwich in the shape of a W will be served, as will cookies, caramel apples, potato chips, ice cream and fresh fruit.
Entertainment includes a palm reader, a strolling magician, a Charlie Chaplin look- alike mime making balloon animals, a demonstration from the WSU fencing team and jazz selections performed by WSU music students. Several drawings for donated prizes will be held during the picnic and campus tours will be available.
Each student will receive a goodie bag containing a Wayne State University T-shirt, sample products and coupons for local businesses.
The event will wrap up around 4 p.m.
