Middle-school girls can encounter science at COEP summer camp

"Science Encounters," a science summer camp offered by the Community Outreach and Education Program (COEP) of Wayne State's Environmental Health Sciences Center, will be held Aug. 3-7 at various locations on the University campus.

Science Encounters is a chance to meet WSU faculty members; learn about their areas of clinical medicine or research; and run laboratory experiments. Expertise areas will include biology, chemistry, nutrition and toxicology.

Each day a different WSU faculty member will introduce a particular area of expertise and be present for the majority of the day to interact with students and help run experiments. A field trip to the Detroit Science Center and an introduction to the campus environment by an urban naturalist also are planned.

The camp is available to 20 middle school girls (entering seventh, eighth or ninth grades) on a first-come, first-enrolled basis. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, with early morning and late afternoon latchkey service available.

Parents will be introduced to camp faculty, staff and coordinators and encouraged to visit the camp and view ongoing projects. A general assembly of students, parents and camp personnel will conclude the week's activities

COEP is offering the camp through the Michigan Metropolitan Girl Scout Council, but participants need not be Girl Scouts to enroll. For more information call the council at (313) 964-4475.

(Campers already scheduled to attend come from Dearborn, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Troy, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Farms, Northville, Detroit, Hazel Park, Livonia and Trenton. Contact WSU Media Relations for more information about campers from your coverage area.)
