Spanish Civil War art on display at Wayne State Jacob Gallery

"Shouts From the Wall," an exhibition of posters and photographs from the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil War, is on display through July 31 in the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery at Wayne State University.

American volunteers who helped defend the Spanish Republic brought back the items from the war. The gallery offers an opportunity to talk with veterans from the war from 1-3 p.m. on Wednesdays during the exhibition.

The brightly colored posters form a major part of the visual record of one of the major cultural, philosophical, moral and political conflicts in modern history. Artistically, the propaganda posters are an example of modern art and printmaking.

Wayne State is co-sponsoring the exhibition with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives.

The archives, located at Brandeis University, is a non-profit national organization devoted to preserving and disseminating the record of the American role during the war and its aftermath.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday. For more information call the Sandra Dupret, gallery curator, at (313) 577-2423.
