Barbara K. Redman, a nationally recognized researcher, administrator and teacher will become the next dean of the Wayne State University College of Nursing. The WSU Board of Governors approved the appointment, effective September 1, at its April 24 general meeting.
Redman is currently dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Connecticut. She also has served as dean of nursing at the University of Colorado, associate dean at the University of Minnesota and as executive director of the American Nurses Association and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
She holds doctoral and master's degrees in education from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor's degree in nursing from South Dakota State University. She also has studied at Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Washington, Georgetown University and George Washington University.
She received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota, and a Distinguished Service and Distinguished Alumnus Awards from South Dakota State University. In addition, she holds honorary doctoral degrees from South Dakota State and the University of Colorado
The new dean, who will succeed Interim Dean Fredericka Shea, has taught at Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, University of Minnesota and University of Washington. Her textbook, The Practice of Patient Education (originally titled The Process of Patient Teaching in Nursing), is a mainstay in numerous nursing schools. Now in its eighth edition and used internationally, it focuses on how nurses teach patients to take care of themselves.
