Two seniors to be honored at WSU spring commencement on May 5

More than 3,000 Wayne State University students will celebrate spring by receiving degrees during spring commencement ceremonies beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in Cobo Arena.

WSU President Irvin Reid, presiding over commencement for the second time since being named the university's ninth president, will confer 1,481 bachelor's, 1,492 masters, 76 doctoral and nine advanced pharmacy degrees.

Seniors Anuj Saxena of Detroit and Heather Zablocki of Sterling Heights will receive Howard A. Donnelly Awards, signifying exceptional scholastic achievement, leadership and service.

Saxena will receive a Bachelor of Science degree, summa cum laude, in engineering with a major in electrical and computer engineering. A native of India, he maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average. He is president of the engineering student faculty board and a member of the Golden Key National Honor society.

He helped organize the College of Engineering Honors Convocation and the engineering open house for high school students. Additionally, he is a volunteer tutor and has done volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, the Boy Scouts and the Indian Student Association at Wayne State.

Zablocki will receive a Bachelor of Science degree, magna cum laude, in biological sciences. She is executive vice president of the WSU Student Council, a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and vice president of the Tae Kwon Do Club.

She served on the WSU Presidential Search Advisory Committee last year and is a member of the Faculty Tenure and Promotion Committee. In addition, she has done volunteer work at Children's Hospital of Michigan, with Operation Clean Sweep, with the Detroit Institute of Arts and with Youth Urban Agenda.
