WSU Elaine L. Jacob Gallery offers Land of Golgotha' installation exhibition

The "Land of Golgotha," an exhibition of place-specific installations by Ann Arbor artist Shawn Skabelund, continues through April 4 at the new Elaine L. Jacob Gallery in Old Main at Wayne State University.

The opening reception will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 6, in the gallery. A public lecture by the artist will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in the David Adamany Undergraduate Library Auditorium.

Skabelund's work explores the mutual dependence between nature and culture and shows the desecration that occurs when humans disregard the intrinsic rights of nature. Using natural elements such as bison skulls and cornmeal, he also creates several large-scale installations that explore contemporary ecological concerns and issues specific to the Detroit community as well.

Skabelund teaches drawing at the University of Michigan and has had a successful career as a visiting artist at colleges and universities throughout the country. He received a master's degree in fine arts from the University of Iowa in 1990. He also has received a number of awards including a 1996Creative Artist's grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Arts Foundation of Michigan.

Gallery hours are 10:30-7 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. For more information call Sandra Dupret, gallery curator, at (313) 577-2423.
