WSU Law School receives $100,000 Myron Leven gift

Myron Leven, 1952 Law School alumnus, recently donated more than $100,000 to the Law School at Wayne State University to set up graduate school scholarships to aid Hispanic students and for other purposes.

The gift is the latest in his efforts to help needy Hispanic students. Since1985 he has helped 215 graduates of Western International and Southwestern high schools attend college who otherwise could not afford it.

A Detroit native, Leven developed his law practice with a heavy representation of Greek and Hispanic communities. For years, Leven put on a big annual festival for his Latino clients and friends in appreciation of their business.

When a friend at Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development asked him to help a needy student, Leven remembered how hard it had been for him to get through school while working full time. He realized it was even more difficult these days and decided to set up a scholarship fund instead of throwing parties.

Leven's work, like his scholarships, reflects his character. He particularly enjoys worker's compensation cases. He says, "I like being able to help people who really need it the most, and who get messed over. They get thrown away like broken machinery."

The most difficult part of his practice, says Leven is "having to tell somebody why they don't have a case."
