Arthur Brown of Huntington Woods, 75, a faculty member in Wayne State University's College of Education since 1966, died of a heart attack Friday, Dec. 12, in Deerfield Beach, Fla. He was on temporary leave and planned to return to teaching at WSU in January for the winter term.
An expert in the history and philosophy of education, Professor Brown was the founding director of the Center for Academic Ethics at the university. He taught ethics, the philosophy of education, moral judgment in education and related courses. He also directed numerous students in their master's degree essays and doctoral dissertations.
From 1983-85, he was president of WSU's University Council, forerunner of the Academic Senate. He also served on the Board of Governors Development and Public Affairs Committee for several years.
Professor Brown was active in many national education leadership associations, including the Philosophy of Education Society, Society of Professors of Education, Phi Delta Kappa, John Dewey Society and the Council of Learned Societies in Education.
"Arthur Brown was the model of what a university professor should be," noted Paula Wood, dean of the College of Education. "He was outstanding in his teaching, in his scholarship, and in the leadership he provided to the college, university and many professional organizations. He will be greatly missed by all of us who loved him." An Army veteran who served during World War II, Professor Brown earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1949. He also held master's and doctoral degrees in the social and philosophical foundations of education from Rutgers University.
He is survived by his wife Claire. They have a daughter, Roberta; a son, Frederic, and two grandchildren. A sister, Ruth Spector, lives in Miami.
Burial arrangements were incomplete at this writing. There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills.
