WSU dance department celebrates new space with open house and performances

An open house 11 a.m - ­4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, is one of several October activities the Department of Dance at Wayne State University plans to celebrate in its new facilities in Old Main.

The daylong event will include an 11 a.m. master class by Terry Orr, director of the Pittsburgh Ballet; a 12:30 p.m. dedication of the Maggie Allesee Dance Studio and a 1 p.m. master class by Visiting Assistant Professor Ronnie Marshall.

Specially priced tickets to the Pittsburgh Ballet's performance of Dracula at the Detroit Opera House are available. The WSU Dance Alumni Association will provide refreshments for the free event.

Another activity will be a premier performance by the Detroit Dance Collective and Wellspring Dance Company 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Oct. 3-4, in the Allesee Studio. Along with the modern dance concert, Barbara Selinger, co-director of the Detroit Dance Collective, will present a master class at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Cory Terry, artistic director of Wellspring, will present a master class at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3. Tickets for the concert are $5 for students and seniors and $10 general admission; master classes are free.

Kenneth Laws, who has a doctorate in physics and 20 years of training with the Pennsylvania Ballet, will offer master classes and lectures on the physics of dance Thursday-Friday, Oct. 16-17. Laws is the author of Physics and Dance and has given more than 100 lectures/presentations across the United States. Call the department for his specific times and locations.
