Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks will be the guest speaker at the ninth Dauris G. Jackson Memorial Seminar and Award for Women in Administration and Management slated for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in the McGregor Memorial Conference Center at Wayne State University.
"Women and the Power of Words: Poetry to Politics" is this year's theme. Brooks, a National Medal of Arts recipient, will read from and comment on her work.
The program marks the 20th anniversary of Jackson's term on the WSU Board of Governors and will recognize women serving on university boards who were selected in statewide elections. They are: Denise Lewis, Elizabeth Hardy, Diane Dunaskiss, Vernice Davis Anthony and Annetta Miller of the WSU Board of Governors; Olivia Maynard, Shirley McFee, Rebecca McGowan and Andrea Fischer Newman of the University of Michigan Board of Regents; Dolores Cook, Dorothy Gonzales and Colleen McNamara of the Michigan State University Board of Trustees.
Jackson was the first African American woman elected to the WSU board. Her goal was to make the university more accessible to women and people of color. She was killed in a car crash three years after her election and the board established the seminar to honor her.
Reservations must be received by Friday, Oct. 3. Cost of the reception is $35 and $20 of that fee is tax-deductible as a donation to the Dauris G. Jackson Scholarship.
Checks payable to Wayne State University can be mailed to the Dauris G. Jackson Memorial Seminar Reception in care of Marie Draper Dykes, Wayne State University, 4116 Faculty/Administration Building, Detroit, 48202. Questions can be directed to (313) 577-2023.
