New WSU art gallery is named for Elaine L. Jacob

First contemporary exhibition opens Sept. 13

Wayne State University's department of art and art history announces its newest gallery, the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery, located in the new wing of the recently renovated Old Main Building.

Nancy Spero/Leon Golub: Contemporaries, a major exhibition featuring the work of two world-renowned American artists, will inaugurate the gallery, Sept.13-Nov. 26.

Alumna, longtime friend and university donor Elaine L. Jacob is the granddaughter of Max Jacob, whose former residence on the campus houses the art history faculty offices and slide library.

Elaine Jacob, who now resides at the Sea Ranch in northern California, received a WSU bachelor of fine arts degree in 1942. She was an executive at M. Jacob and Sons, Inc., the oldest bottle and container distributor in the United States, until her retirement in 1983.

While there, she headed the company's successful plastics division. Since retiring Jacob has been involved in her community; she recently helped raise funds for a new 15,000-square-foot art center at the Sea Ranch.

In addition to her endowment of WSU's new gallery, Jacob, along with members of her family, previously underwrote the renovation of the Max Jacob House in the late 1970s. She also has been a frequent supporter of the extensive WSU art collection.

The Jacob gallery, which will feature exhibitions of important local, national and international contemporary art, supplements the Community Arts gallery to create a second major art gallery for the university. The Jacob gallery is located at 402 Old Main with its entrance at 480 West Hancock, near Second Avenue.
