Detroit Festival of the Arts announces Youth Artists Market and Festival of Banners

Art Festival invites youth participation

The Detroit Festival of the Arts committee seeks participants for the Youth Artists' Market and the Festival of Banners in the 11th festival scheduled for Friday-Sunday, Sept. 19-21, in the University Cultural Center.

Creative young people aged eight to eighteen may sell their art in the third annual Youth Artists' Market from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday on the university campus.

Part of the festival's IBM Children's Fair, the market is a collection of drawings, paintings, sculpture and jewelry. The entry fee is $5 for one day and $8 for both.

Last year, more than 90 young people from metropolitan Detroit participated. Interested artists may call (313) 577-5088 for an application to mail with a photograph of their artwork and fee to the University Cultural Center Association, 4735 Cass, Detroit, MI 48202.

The Festival of Banners will repeat last year's successful attempt to embellish the festival's walkways with decorative banners. Oakland Mall also will display the banners from Sept. 1-17.

The festival encourages individuals, school groups and art professionals to join in the fun and create art banners. Banners must be 72 inches in height and constructed of weather-resistant fabric. Guidelines for the banners competition are available in a brochure by calling the UCCA office, (313) 577-5088. Categories for prize consideration are professional, general and youth.

The festival is a multicultural arts extravaganza that spans 15 blocks and features 130 visual artists, local and national performing artists, street performers, Antiquarian Book Fair, Literary Festival, American Jazz Cafe, parades and carriage rides.

Wayne State University and the University Cultural Center Association (UCCA) sponsor the festival.
