The university captured first place in the printed promotional materials category of the 1996 United Way Community Services communication competition.
Arthurine Turner, co-chair of the university's Combined Charitable Contributions Campaign and College of Lifelong Learning business manager, accepted the award on behalf of the university during an awards luncheon at the Fairlane Club in Dearborn.
Presenting the awards were Geneva Williams, chief operating officer of United Way, and contest chair Colleen Robar, corporate communications manager at Crain Communications.
Eight Detroit-based organizations were among 21 honored on the basis of creativity, technical excellence and effectiveness in encouraging employee involvement and support.
The 1996 drive United Way drive raised more than $59 for human service needs in Detroit and southeastern Michigan.
