Andrew Young to visit campus as Urban Perspectives lecturer

Civil rights leader, politician and diplomat Andrew Young will be the guest speaker at the Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives lecture at noon Thursday, March 6, in the Community Arts Auditorium.

Young will review the findings of 'Repairing the Breach', the 1996 report of the National Task Force on African-American Men and Boys, which offers ideas for strengthening families, safety and rebuilding civil society in the nation's communities. The $11 million initiative was chaired by Young and funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Young, 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics Committee chairman, has spent more than 35 years in public service. In 1961 he became a top aide to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and served as the executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

A three-term congressman, Young resigned his seat in the House of Representatives in 1977 to become U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He was Atlanta's mayor from 1981-85.

The lecture is free but admission is by ticket only. Tickets are available at Alumni House, 441 Ferry Mall, and room 351 Student Center Building.

The event is sponsored by the Alumni Association, the Student Alumni Association and the Student Council. For more details call Alumni House at 577-2166.
