Pharmacy student at Wayne State University receives Sidney Barthwell Scholarship Award

Wayne State University student Lisa Williams of Detroit is the first recipient of the Sidney Barthwell Endowed Scholarship.

Named for retired Detroit pharmacist and businessman Sidney Barthwell, the $1,000 scholarship was established in 1996 and will be awarded annually to an African-American pharmacy student at WSU.

Barthwell is a 1929 graduate of the Detroit Technological Institute pharmacy program, a forerunner of WSU's College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. He founded the Barthwell Drugs chain, which grew to nine stores and three ice cream parlors.

Seed money for the scholarship fund was provided through a tribute event held last year for Barthwell.
