Oakwood Healthcare Inc. and Wayne State University officially joined forces Thursday during a ceremonial banner signing. More than 40 WSU medical residents specializing in the areas of otolaryngology, urology and dermatology began assimilating into the Oakwood system earlier this month. \"This enhanced relationship with Oakwood provides us with a partner that can collaborate with us on all three components of our mission: education, research, and patient care,\" said Robert M. Mentzer Jr., dean of the WSU School of Medicine.

Wayne State forum addresses moving forward from 1967 riot

A group of six panelists, all under the age of 40 and all deemed as a new generation of Detroit leaders, gathered Thursday at WSU's Law School to discuss the ramifications of Detroit's 1967 civil unrest and the legacy it left on the city. FOX 2 aired interviews with panelists including Associate Director of WSU's Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies Ethriam Brammer; and a live feed was available on the Web sites of both FOX 2 and WDIV Channel 4. Sticker shock hits college students

A front-page story about the high cost of college tuition around the state leads with the tuition increase announced yesterday by Wayne State. The article outlines the state's position on the budget crisis as well as the dilemma for universities. "It's unconscionable what the state has done to higher education generally and to us in particular," said WSU Board of Governors Chairman Eugene Driker. "It's not an easy matter for any of us to create additional economic pain for people," observed Board member Paul Massaron. "Finding long-term solutions to the problems Michigan faces is complicated and requires patience from institutions," said state Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop. A table accompanying the article lists tuition increases for all of Michigan's public universities except Saginaw Valley State, which will announce its rate Friday.

Wayne State approves 12.8% tuition boost

Wayne State University's Board of Governors voted 6-2 Wednesday for a 12.8% tuition boost in the fall, in addition to a $13-per-credit contingency fee. That fee would be removed after the fall term if the state returns $20 million in delayed appropriations by mid-October. The increase means a student taking 30 credit hours of course work per year would pay $8,039. Board member Jacquelin Washington said it is up to students and university leaders to make it clear to the Legislature that future cuts to the state's public universities will not be tolerated.
