Swine Flu vaccine being tested now

The swine flu vaccination is currently being tested, and pending its approval, hospitals will likely begin immunizing certain groups around Thanksgiving. Dr. Suzanne White, from the Pandemic Preparedness Task Force at Wayne State University, says there are five groups targeted for the vaccine: pregnant women, people who care for children younger than six months of age, health care workers, everyone six months thru 24 years old, and anyone 25 through 64 with health conditions.

Cancer patients separated from spouse at diagnosis die sooner

Cancer patients who are separated from their spouses at the time of their diagnosis do not live as long as widowed, divorced and never married patients, according to a new study to be published in CA, the journal of the American Cancer Society. "This study should help us understand the role of how important social support is for the cancer patient and how it impacts outcome of cancer therapy," said Dr. Andre Konski, professor and chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Wayne State University's School of Medicine, who took part in the study.

Students flock to dorms that offer living, learning

Wayne State University is featured in an article about the rise in living/learning communities on college campuses. One of the university's goals is to help connect students with specific study interests even if there is no residence hall base for them. \"In the last four years, we\'ve tried to expand the notion of what our learning communities are,\" said Howard Shapiro, Wayne State\'s associate vice president for undergraduate programs. \"When I came here (five years ago) we had about 800 students involved in our learning communities. Thousands of incoming Wayne State University freshmen form massive community revitalization effort

Nearly 2,700 Wayne State University incoming freshmen will participate in Warrior Service Day, a daylong community service initiative benefiting several Detroit civic organizations including, ARISE! Detroit, Coalition on Temporary Shelter Detroit, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Gleaners Community Food Bank and more. Warrior Service Day is a function of iStart: New Student Days, a program designed to jump-start the academic careers of first-year students.

Wayne State freshmen hit campus

Nearly 1,500 freshmen are expected to move into two residence halls at Wayne State, with upperclassmen scheduled to move in Monday. University Police Lt. Dave Scott commented in a Free Press article that things are moving smoothly as parents and students make their way to the residence halls unloading their vehicles and waiting to register. At least 100 student volunteers and resident assistants are assisting students and families with the move-in. Several students were interviewed about the settling-in process Photographers from the Free Press and News were also on hand taking images of parents and students.

Move-In Day at Wayne State

WXYZ-TV 7, WDIV-TV 4, WJBK-Fox 2, WWJ-AM 950. 8/30 Television and radio reporters from four media outlets provided on-site coverage of move-in day activities, interviewing students, parents and university officials. Channels 2, 4 and 7 aired stories during their 6 p.m. newscasts. WWJ reporter Terri Lee Sylvester interviewed Howard Shapiro, associate vice president for undergraduate programs and general education; Tim Michael, director of housing and residential life; and sophomore Maria Cabrera, Towers resident advisor and move-in day volunteer. Fox 2 reporter Robin Murdock talked to Cabrera and WSU Police Lt. Dave Scott, in addition to several students and volunteers.

Business centers coming

The Wayne State School of Business is launching Business Assistance Centers in three Detroit-area locations in early September. The school is seeking clients and partners who will work with MBA students at the college. The assistance centers will provide support through a consulting services group in areas such as marketing, business strategy, financial projections, information-technology support and human resource development programs. Crain's reposted an item that ran last week about the assistance centers.

Wayne State gets $285k for nurse distance learning

Attendees from across the state gathered at the WSU College of Nursing recently to thank U.S. Reps, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick and Fred Upton for their support of nursing education. They were instrumental in securing $285,000 in federal funding to support creation of a graduate distance learning program in psychiatric and public health nursing. WSU partnered with Kalamazoo Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to bring the program to nurses in that city and surrounding communities.

Wayne State\'s Stan Thornton took the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and the Warriors downed Mercyhurst, 31-13, at Adams Field Saturday. It was the football season opener for both teams. Joique Bell ran for 135 yards on 32 carries and had two rushing touchdowns for Wayne State. Quarterback Zack George completed eight passes in 15 attempts for 152 yards. Anthony Morasso kicked a 26-yard field goal. A photo of Bell leaping into the end zone accompanies the Free Press story. TV-7 aired action shots from the game and opined that Bell "will be playing in the NFL next year."
