Michigan's advanced manufacturing sector growing, study shows

More than 381,000 people at 11,000 Michigan firms are working in high-tech, highly productive advanced manufacturing jobs - nearly two-thirds of the state's manufacturing base, according to a new University Research Corridor (URC) study. In their 2009 fiscal year, URC institutions Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University invested more than $101.9 million in advanced manufacturing R&D and had active research awards of more than $425 million. The study was released Wednesday as part of a three-campus URC bus tour showcasing the proximity between the three partners and research strength of Michigan's world-class research intensive universities. http://www.detnews.com/article/20100722/BIZ/7220352/1001/Report--State-is-a-star-in-research-manufacturing#ixzz0uO0QJkV9 http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20100721/FREE/100729961 http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9H3J7BO0.htm http://www.clickondetroit.com/money/24339751/detail.html http://wwj.cbslocal.com/2010/07/21/urc-shows-off-in-high-tech-bus-tour/ http://wwj.cbslocal.com/2010/07/21/urc-report-high-tech-manufacturing-alive-and-well-in-mich/ http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20100721/NEWS03/307210020/1002/NEWS01/Report-says-Michigan-manufacturing-transforming http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2010/07/21/report_advanced_manufacturing_prominent_in_mich/ http://www.sfexaminer.com/breaking/report-2-in-3-industrial-jobs-103-percent-of-michigan-workers-in-advanced-manufacturing-98941044.html http://www.canadianbusiness.com/markets/market_news/article.jsp?content=D9H3J7BO0 http://www.xconomy.com/detroit/2010/07/21/michigan%E2%80%99s-research-universities-say-they%E2%80%99re-creating-new-high-tech-manufacturing-jobs/ http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=1004&DateTime=7%2F21%2F2010+5%3A27%3A01+PM&Term=wayne+state&PlayClip=TRUE http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2010/07/post_38.html http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/michigan/news.newsmain/article/5/0/1678719/Business/Research.Corridor.Touts.Progress http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/michigan/news.newsmain?action=article&ARTICLE_ID=1678365 http://www.fox33.com/category/story/?id=241485 http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=2980&DateTime=7%2F21%2F2010+4%3A03%3A26+PM&Term=wayne+state&PlayClip=TRUE

Richard Bernstein, chair of Wayne State's Board of Governors, said in a statement that Noren "brought a wealth of energy and experience to the university…The university community thanks Noren for his service, but fully understands his decision to step down. We wish Jay and Sheri the very best." Noren said in a statement, "It has been a pleasure to serve the university during such a challenging and important time in its history. And I believe WSU is continuing on a path to realize its major potential as one of the nation\'s leading urban research universities. I am confident in Wayne State\'s direction, its leadership, and most of all its people, and look forward to watching its progress in the years ahead." http://www.detnews.com/article/20100721/SCHOOLS/7210353/1409/metro/Wayne-State-president-Jay-Noren-stepping-down http://www.universitybusiness.com/newssummary.aspx?news=yes&postid=23426 http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=1004&DateTime=7%2F21%2F2010+6%3A07%3A50+AM&LineNumber=&MediaStationID=1004&playclip=True&RefPage= http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=999&DateTime=7%2F21%2F2010+6%3A05%3A37+AM&LineNumber=&MediaStationID=999&playclip=True&RefPage= http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=1009&DateTime=7%2F21%2F2010+6%3A03%3A38+AM&LineNumber=&MediaStationID=1009&playclip=True&RefPage= http://www.freep.com/article/20100720/NEWS01/100720037/1001/NEWS/Wayne-State-U.-president-Jay-Noren-stepping-down http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20100720/FREE/100729996 http://www.wlns.com/Global/story.asp?S=12840321 http://www.fox28.com/Global/story.asp?S=12840321 http://www.therepublic.com/view/story/7f7c8effd9304778bdef38ed49f20432/MI--Wayne_State_President-Resignation/ http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/24327432/detail.html http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-mi-waynestatepreside,0,5865207.story http://www.battlecreekenquirer.com/article/20100720/NEWS01/307200007/Wayne+State+president+resigns http://www.wfrv.com/news/michigan/98851754.html http://www.pantagraph.com/news/local/education/article_3ecf5302-943b-11df-9f76-001cc4c002e0.html http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2010/07/wayne_state_university_preside.html http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/michigan/news.newsmain/article/0/1/1677815/Michigan.News/Wayne.State.University.President.Resigns http://www.9and10news.com/Category/Story/?id=241223&cID=2 http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=1004&DateTime=7%2F20%2F2010+11%3A10%3A13+PM&LineNumber=&MediaStationID=1004&playclip=True&RefPage= http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=1014&DateTime=7%2F20%2F2010+6%3A07%3A22+PM&LineNumber=&MediaStationID=1014&playclip=True&RefPage= http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=2790&DateTime=7%2F20%2F2010+4%3A03%3A19+PM&LineNumber=&MediaStationID=2790&playclip=True&RefPage= http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=2785&DateTime=7%2F20%2F2010+2%3A34%3A31+PM&LineNumber=&MediaStationID=2785&playclip=True&RefPage= http://www.wdetfm.org/article/wayne-state-president-jay-noren-resigns/ http://www.universitybusiness.com/newssummary.aspx?news=yes&postid=23426

Nearly 400,000 people at 11,000 Michigan companies are employed in high-tech, advanced-manufacturing jobs, demonstrating that manufacturing is alive in Michigan, according to a report released today by the state\'s three largest universities. This work is supported by Wayne State University, University of Michigan and Michigan State University, which collaborate to accelerate economic development through the University Research Corridor, which commissioned the report. The latest report showed that the URC has invested more than $101.9 million in advanced manufacturing research and design, and had active research awards of more than $425 million. The report was released during a media tour of university facilities that support the advanced manufacturing sector, including Wayne State's Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems lab. http://mms.tveyes.com/Transcript.asp?StationID=1014&DateTime=7%2F21%2F2010+8%3A27%3A04+AM&LineNumber=&MediaStationID=1014&playclip=True&RefPage=

Wayne State's Researcher's Dashboard

Wayne State's Computing & Information Technology office and the Office of the Vice President for Research created a new software application called the Researcher\'s Dashboard. The app allows researchers to monitor and manage proposals, grants and projects by providing them real-time information and updates. The idea is to minimize administrative time so that researchers can maximize time in the lab and the field. \"This is the first time the research tool was built with the researcher in mind,\" says Jim Barbret, associate vice president of research at Wayne State University.
