Poison Center to present first Toxicology Seminar on Oct. 18

The Michigan Poison and Drug Information Center at the Wayne State University School of Medicine will conduct its first Toxicology Symposium on Oct. 18 at The Henry Autograph Collection Hotel in Dearborn, Mich.

The catered event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., offers continuing medical education credits for eligible participants.

The symposium will cover a variety of topics focused on “Tox in the Acute Care Setting,” with lectures presented by the poison center’s toxicologists.

The Michigan Poison and Drug Information Center is the state’s sole poison center, providing real-time poison exposure treatment, education and prevention services all day, every day of the year. Many of the calls it responds to come from emergency room physicians treating patients who have ingested or been exposed to poison substances.

“Our center’s mission and vision are predicated upon establishing a statewide footprint as leaders in providing toxicological patient care and toxicology education,” said Varun Vohra, PharmD, M.P.H., who co-directs the center with Andrew King, M.D. Both men are associate professors of Emergency Medicine for the WSU School of Medicine. “Since a cornerstone of our mission is achieved through education, we are excited to offer our first ever Toxicology Symposium, a lecture series dedicated to teaching clinical management principles for acutely poisoned patients to health care professionals of all types. This offers us a chance to establish connections to improve our collaborative function with all elements of the health care system, with a unified goal of improving health outcomes for Michiganders.”

Fees for the symposium are $150 for physicians, pharmacists and nurses; $80 for fellows and residents; $70 for specialists in poison information and emergency medical service/first responders; $65 for health educators and $50 for students.
