Shiffman Medical Library closed for renovations Feb. 20-24

Renovations include a reconfiguration of the library's atrium space.

The Shiffman Medical Library at the Wayne State University School of Medicine will be closed for renovations Feb. 20-24 to create expanded study space and updated seating configurations to meet students’ learning preferences and evolving needs.

The atrium will feature new collaborative seating options, and the quiet study area will include individual study booths and carrels for private study. Additionally, all study rooms will have newly installed monitors with the ability to screen cast from a connected device.

The new furniture and equipment will be installed throughout the entire library, with specific areas for students to work together, discuss ideas, collaborate on projects, study individually or relax in between classes and activities.

Librarians will continue to provide online reference, research and instructional support during renovations.

The work will be completed in three phases:

- Feb. 20-24: The Shiffman building will be closed during this phase.

- March 13-17 and March 30-31: Closure dates are being finalized for these periods.

Students worked with WSU School of Medicine administration on the project. Medical students were surveyed and offered different furniture selections from which to choose. The students’ top choices will be installed.

The renovations were made possible by a generous gift from former Wayne State professors Robert Mitchell and Diane Sasaki, active library users who dedicated their lives to educating students in medicine and science.
