The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Office of Graduate Medical Education hosted the 14th annual Quality Improvement Research Day in collaboration with its primary clinical partner, Henry Ford Rochester Hospital.
The April 22 event showcased the projects conducted by residents in the Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Transitional Year programs.
Anne Messman, M.D., associate dean of WSU Graduate Medical Education, and Sheryl Wissman, M.D., chief medical officer at Henry Ford Rochester Hospital, opened the day with a welcome address for the more than 50 attendees. Thirteen resident/faculty teams hosted prerecorded presentations of their research, with a resident respondent taking questions from three judges and attendees after each presentation.
The top scorer for the 2025 QI Research Day was a team from Internal Medicine, presenting “Enhancing Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence through Targeted Interventions in a Resident-Based Community Clinic.” Co-authors included Ayushi Garg (presenter), Nour Aldaoud, Jai Kumar (respondent) and Javaria Asif, with faculty mentor Vesna Tegeltija.
In second place was another Internal Medicine team presenting “Improving Sepsis Care in a Community Hospital.” Co-authors included Rochelle Jayavendra (presenter), Muhammad Siddiqui (respondent) and Nabeel Badar, with faculty mentor Vesna Tegeltija.
In third place was a team from Family Medicine, with “POCUS Bingo.” Co-authors included Jodi Hastings (presenter), Candis Jarbo, Jacob Rubin, Sara Dervishi, Oladipupo Dehinbo and Simon Galkin (respondent), with faculty mentor Kathryn Cox.
In fourth place was a team from Internal Medicine with “Improving Discharge Before Noon Initiative in a Community Hospital.” Co-authors included Kyle Gifford (presenter), Palpasa Bhui and Abdul Waqas (respondent), with faculty mentor Vesna Tegeltija.
The top scoring team will conduct a slide presentation at the 2025 SEMCME QIPS Summit and Research Forum, to be held as a joint event at the Somerset Inn in Troy on May 22. The second, third and fourth scoring teams will present posters on their research.
Judges included Camelia Arsene, M.D., Ph.D., M.H.S., director of Undergraduate Medical Education and associate program director for the Transitional Year Program at Trinity Health Oakland Hospital and associate professor at the WSU School of Medicine; Sean McCormick, M.D., who completed a WSU Emergency Medicine residency and is now assistant program director of that Emergency Medicine residency program; and Michael Twiner, M.D., Ph.D., a 2016 graduate of the WSU School of Medicine who now serves as assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at WSU.
The keynote speaker was Robert Flora, M.D., M.B.A., M.P.H., chief academic officer and vice president of Academic Affairs at McLaren Health Care.
