Symposium series on history of Black Americans in medicine continues into April

The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Black Medical Association and Black Men In White Coats will present a two-month-long symposium on the history of Black Americans in medicine.

The lineup for the 2023 Black History Symposium includes:

Feb. 1: Lonnie Joe, M.D., on “The Black History of the Detroit Medical Center,” and Anita Moncrease, M.D., M.P.H., president of Moncrease & Associates LLC and associate professor of WSU Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, on “The History of Black Medical Schools in the United States.”

Feb. 8: Samuel Johnson, M.D., chair of WSU Radiology, on “The Flexner Report,” and Stacey Varner, M.D., on “Blacks in Medicine, Past and Present.”

Feb. 15: T. Jann Caison-Sorey, M.D., M.S.A., M.B.A., Henry Ford Health pediatrician, on “The Journey of Black Physicians, Trials and Triumphs,” and Theodore Jones, M.D., associate professor of WSU Obstetrics and Gynecology, on "Minority Physicians: Journey to Organized Medicine.”

Feb. 22: James Brown, M.D., on “A Brief Survey of the History of Medicine,” and Ijeoma Opara, M.D., assistant professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, on “When You Know Your History You Know Your Greatness.”

March 1: Aliya Hines, M.D., assistant professor of WSU Dermatology, on “Our Contributions to Medicine,” and the Rev. Donald Tynes, M.D., co-founder of Reach Out to Youth and a clinical assistant professor of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine for the WSU School of Medicine, on “Medicine 4,500 B.C. to the Present.”

March 8: Stacy Varner, M.D.; Lonnie Joe, M.D.; Theodore Jones, M.D.; and Anita Moncrease, M.D., M.P.H., on “Faith, Medicine and Black History.”
 
March 15: Patrice Harold Barrow, M.D., on “The Long History of the Black Obstetrician,” and John Barnwell, M.D., on “In The Footsteps of Imhotep.”

March 22: Holly Gilmer, M.D., on “African American Presence and Challenge in Neurosurgery,” and Isaac Powell, M.D., on “The Black Physician’s Role in Saving Lives.”

March 29: Herman Gray, M.D., M.B.A., on “Black History in the Pediatric Experience,” and Michelle Hardaway, M.D., on “Black is Beautiful: History of the Role of an African American Plastic Surgeon.”

April 7: Donovan Roy, vice dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, on "The African American Presence in Medicine: From Sports to Surgery," and Jonelle Moore on "The History of the Black Doula."

April 12: Felicia Randolph, M.D., on "The Impact of Blacks in Medicine and Residency,” and Greg Casey, M.D., on "The History of Surgery From Imhotep to Modern Times."
