The faculty and staff of the Wayne State University School of Medicine recently recognized the commitment to the school made by former Dean Jack D. Sobel, M.D.
A physical celebration will be planned to honor Dr. Sobel, distinguished professor of Internal Medicine, once faculty, staff and students can return to campus.
Basim Dubaybo, M.D., vice dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development, presented Dr. Sobel with a plaque and gift on behalf of the faculty and staff.
“In his decades of service at WSU, Dean Sobel has been guided by a number of principles. He demonstrated unyielding loyalty to the university and also to the faculty and staff,” Dr. Dubaybo said. “He led by example, demonstrating integrity and selflessness. He made an effort to know everyone and everyone’s circumstances, and dedicated time and energy to meeting the personal and professional needs of all individuals he interacted with. He advocated for people and made sure he created opportunities for growth for people who reported to him, including faculty, staff, students and trainees. He is a real model for all of us.”
The plaque reads:

“I am deeply touched, thankful and appreciative of both the beautiful vase and certificate,” Dr. Sobel said. “I will always treasure their support. I had the pleasure of a great team that will never be forgotten.”
Dr. Sobel also received an “Inspiration Art Glass Award.” The item, about 7 inches tall, features a contemporary look with swirls of WSU colors embedded in the glass. The base is inscribed with his name, title and his years of service as dean of the School of Medicine.
