Dr. Markova plays major role at AAMC annual meeting

Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education and chair of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences Tsveti Markova, M.D., FAAFP, was quite active during the recent 2019 American Association of Medical Colleges Learn-Serve-Lead annual meeting, held in Phoenix, Ariz., Nov. 8-12.

Dr. Markova served as a facilitator for a seminar on “Sexual Harassment and Gender Discrimination in GME: Getting to Accountability,” which addressed the results of a survey distributed by the Group on Resident Affairs to its membership about institutional initiatives to ensure respectful learning environments and develop mechanisms for monitoring progress.

She also facilitated a session on “Galvanizing the UME and GME Toward Action in the Transition to Residency” with panelist Wanda Lipscomb, Ph.D., senior associate dean for Diversity and Inclusion at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, which focused on strategies for more productive collaboration between undergraduate and graduate medical education offices to improve the transition to residency.

In addition, at the annual meeting’s special poster session on quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, Dr. Markova presented a snapshot of current Wayne State University Graduate Medical Education research, “An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Opioid Management Case: Correlations with Residents’ Systems-Based Practice (SBP) Milestones,” which generated much interest.

Dr. Markova is completing her tenure as the chair of the Steering Committee of the AAMC Graduate Resident Affairs, which represents institutional leaders who oversee the quality of graduate medical education and accreditation of AAMC member medical schools and teaching hospitals. At the Learn-Serve-Lead meeting, Dr. Markova welcomed incoming GRA Steering Committee Chair David Kountz and immediate past Chair Dan Giang.
