De'Andrea Matthews, director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, has contributed a chapter to the book "Campus Diversity Triumphs: Valleys of Hope," the 20th volume in the Diversity in Higher Education series edited by Sherwood Thompson for Emerald Publishing.

Matthews, in her chapter titled "Intercultural Consciousness: A Premedical Teaching Methodology," details the development of a course on intercultural competency for pre-medical post-baccalaureate students at Wayne State University.

"With ethnic and racial diversity on the rise nationally and globally, physicians-in-training, as well as practitioners, need to develop both awareness and sensitivity for the various populations they serve," she said.

Matthews has spent the last decade training and educating students, faculty and staff on access and equity issues. She said the methodology outlined in her chapter can be applied to other professional programs.

Her work in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion includes overseeing outreach, recruitment and retention of faculty, staff and students who are underrepresented in medicine.

She is a co-author of "A National Long-term Outcomes Evaluation of U.S. Premedical Postbaccalaureate Programs Designed to Promote Health Care Access and Workforce Diversity," published in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved.
