Residents of Detroit and neighboring communities are invited to attend an event to examine and develop actions to end the practice of race-based medicine.
The event, scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. at the Third New Hope Baptist Church, located at 12850 Plymouth Road, Detroit, will feature leading voices from the medical field, community advocates and individuals focused on reforming medical practices that unfairly differentiate treatment based on race.
“In light of growing evidence and awareness that race-based medicine perpetuates health disparities, our community must come together to demand change," said David Underwood, managing director of Detroit Community Care Network. “This conversation is the first step in building a healthier, more just, health care system for everyone.”
The event will be hosted by Hayley Thompson, Ph.D., professor of Oncology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, and director of the Center for Health Equity & Community Knowledge in Urban Populations.
Ijeoma Nnodim Opara, M.D., associate professor of Internal Medicine-Pediatrics, and founding co-chair of the Detroit End Race-Based Medicine Taskforce at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, will deliver a keynote presentation on how race-based medicine impacts the health and wellbeing of Detroiters.
Other speakers include Lisa Braddix, chief equity officer of the Southeastern Michigan Health Association; Claudia Richardson, M.D., medical director for the city of Detroit; Bishop Edgar Vann, senior pastor of Second Ebenezer Church and founder of the Detroit Equity Report; and the Rev. Quantez Pressley, lead pastor of Third New Hope Baptist Church.
The event will provide attendees with an in-depth understanding of race-based medicine and present practical approaches to advocate for systemic change. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, engage in discussions and leave equipped with tools to take an active role in eradicating the harmful practice.
