While there are many resources available for researchers in the West to study global health problems, the same is not true for low- and middle-income countries that often lack the funding, infrastructure and mentorship to accomplish sustainable projects. The GHRC was founded in 2019 under the leadership of Vijaya Arun Kumar, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of Emergency Medicine, and co-director, Paul Kilgore, M.D., M.P.H., professor and director of Research for the Department of Pharmacy Practice.
GHRC offers an online global health research training course in collaboration with faculty from Wayne State University and affiliated organizations. The course targets international researchers interested in developing research capacity at their home institutions by receiving high standard of training and mentorship. The collaborative strives to bridge the research gap between developed and developing countries.
“Volunteers are an integral part of the workshop,” Dr. Kumar said. “There is an unmet need to engage graduate and undergraduate students in global health research. Having them join as volunteers would give them an idea of not only the knowledge behind global health research but also get actively involved with some of the collaborative global health work that would be generated from the workshop. Volunteers are, indeed, a great addition to GHRC’s team. We really hope that our collaborative will further expand, with the help of our volunteers, to further create a passion for global health among undergraduate, medical, nursing, pharmacology, management, engineering and public health students.
