Jahanavi Ramakrishna, M.D., a Wayne State University School of Medicine Internal Medicine resident, has won the 2023-24 Peter Svider Memorial Resident Scholarship Award.

The award is presented annually to a graduating resident or fellow in a graduate medical education program in recognition of distinctive achievement in research activities across the entire period of training. The Svider Award recognizes a resident who has achieved a high level of scholarly productivity reflecting the ideals of graduate medical training.

Dr. Ramakrishna will receive a plaque commemorating her award and a letter of commendation from Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education Anne Messman, M.D. 

Dr. Ramakrishna received her medical degree with honors from Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in Chennai, India, and is completing her residency in Internal Medicine at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital in Rochester, Mich.

Dr. Ramakrishna achieved a high level of scholarly productivity and demonstrated leadership in enhancing the culture of inquiry in her program. In addition to a robust publication and presentation record and multiple collaborations with faculty and fellows on research projects, she held a WSU Global Urban and Health Equity Fellowship during 2021-23, developed Institutional Review Board and authorship tutorials, served as an assistant editor for the Journal of Clinical Tuberculosis and Other Mycobacterial Diseases and led several quality improvement projects. 

In July, she will begin an Infectious Diseases/Epidemiology Intelligence Service fellowship with Rush/Cook County/CDC in Chicago.

The Svider Award is named in honor of the scholarly achievements, clinical excellence and collegiality of Peter Svider, M.D., who completed a residency in the WSU Department of Otolaryngology in 2018. Dr. Svider wrote more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and eight book chapters. He died in 2021 at the age of 34.
