The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Office of Graduate Medical Education hosted the 13th annual Quality Improvement Research Day in collaboration with its primary clinical partner, Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital.
The online event, conducted April 23, showcased the quality improvement projects conducted by residents in the Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Transitional Year programs at the hospital from 2023 to 2024. Fourteen resident/faculty teams hosted prerecorded YouTube presentations of their research, with a resident respondent taking questions from three judges and attendees.
Anne Messman, M.D., associate dean and designated institutional officer of Graduate Medical Education, and Sheryl Wissman, M.D., chief medical Officer at the hospital, opened the day with a welcome address for the 50-plus attendees. Jeffrey Kline, M.D., professor and associate chair of Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine, served as keynote speaker, “The Janus face of Gestalt in decision-making” in clinical practice.
The top four scorers were:
“Improving Obesity Outcomes in an Academic Clinic” (presented by Anoopa Mathew), with co-authors David Samrah, Jahanavi Ramakrishna, Aman Saleemi, Emecheta Ajaero, Hasan Ilyas, Javaria Asif, and faculty advisors Vesna Tegeltija and Zain Kulairi
“Standardization of Inpatient Hypertension Management” (presented by Dhairya Salvi), with co-authors Nour Aldaoud, Vamsi Krishna Lavu, Abdullah Yesilyaprak, and faculty advisor Vesna Tegeltija
“Improving Sepsis Care in a Community Hospital” (presented by Taha Alaa), with co-authors and faculty advisors Zachary Johnson, Sarwan Kumar and Vesna Tegeltija
“Overutilization of Proton Pump Inhibitors” (presented by Tripti Nagar), with co-authors Alaa Taha, Anthony Calabrese, Ayushi Garg, and faculty advisor Vesna Tegeltija
The top scoring team will give a slide presentation at the 2024 Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education Quality Improvement, Patient Safety Summit and Research Forum, to be held as a joint event in Lovett Hall at The Henry Ford on May 22. The second, third and fourth scoring teams will present posters at the event.
Judges included Brigette Lorenz, M.D. ’93, clinical assistant professor vice chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital; Sean McCormick, M.D., assistant program director of the Emergency Medicine residency program at WSU; and Michael Twiner, M.D., ’16, Ph.D., assistant clinical professor in of WSU Emergency Medicine.
