Wayne State University School of Medicine Class of 2024 Warrior M.D. students Yasmeen Alcodray, Manvir Sandhu and Tilmira Smith attended the American Academy of Family Physicians National Conference, held July 27-29 in Kansas City, as recipients of the Family Medicine Leads Scholarship, awarded by the AAFP Foundation.
The trio was among a group of nine WSU students who attended.
Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 129,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the largest medical society devoted solely to primary care.
Alcodray also was selected by the AAFP as this year’s Student Membership Ambassador for the School of Medicine. She is the school’s senior Family Medicine Interest Group leader. As an ambassador, Alcodray can earn funding for the interest group by increasing student memberships to the AAFP.
“I am honored to have been chosen for this leadership opportunity and excited to see more student involvement this year,” Alcodray said. “I’ve been involved with the Family Medicine Interest Group at Wayne State for the past two years, and now I play a more senior role in the organization. I felt like the AAFP Student Membership Ambassador position was a great opportunity to expand on what I have learned through FMIG, and more importantly, to help make a greater impact and create more awareness of Family Medicine to Wayne State students. My goal is to help students learn more about the opportunities in Family Medicine and create even more involvement.”
