Sessions on gender equity and careers in academics added for 8th World Congress on Ultrasound in Medical Education at Wayne State

Two new sessions led by renowned experts in their respective fields have been added to the program for the upcoming 2023 World Congress on Ultrasound in Medical Education. 

Drs. Jenny Mladenovic and Richard Hoppmann have been added to the roster of plenary speakers.

Jenny Mladenovic, M.D., M.B.A., M.A.C.P., president and chief executive office of the Center for Women in Academic Medicine and Science, will present “Women in Medicine: Getting to Gender Equity;” and Richard Hoppmann, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.I.U.M., dean emeritus of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and founder of the Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education, will present “Navigating an Academic Career.”

The congress, set for Sept. 7-10 in Detroit, is hosted by the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

The congress will bring together the medical profession and those concerned about the quality of today’s health care to share experiences, expertise and thoughts on how best to incorporate the power of ultrasound into education and clinical practice. The event will feature the latest in innovative research in ultrasound education, including the use of artificial intelligence to teach and assess learner competencies. Medical students, mid-level practitioners, allied health professionals, residents and graduate students will have the opportunity to interact with national and international research experts.

Dr. Mladenovic is founder and chair of the GEMS ALLIANCE, or Gender Equity in Academic Medicine and Science. Over her 35 years in academic medicine, she has acquired a broad understanding of the multitude of issues that shape the trajectory of women’s careers, and is passionately committed to advancing opportunities for women to flourish in these environments. She previously served as executive vice president and provost at Oregon Health Sciences University, where she developed creative faculty and science initiatives, a new school of public health, an interprofessional rural campus, and a university-wide partnership in southeast Asia. Previously, she held positions as senior associate dean at two institutions, and as chair or chief of medicine.

Dr. Hoppmann is founder of the Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education and the University of South Carolina Ultrasound Institute. He has been the president of four national and international organizations and has received multiple teaching awards, including the national Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award. He has produced more than 50 scientific publications, which have been cited by more than 3,000 articles, has edited two books, has presented at many professional meetings across the globe, has received more than $2 million in grants, and holds five patents.
