Twelve students were honored at the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s 2022-2023 Pre-Medical Post Baccalaureate Program Closing Ceremony, held June 1 in the Margherio Family Conference Center.
The Post Baccalaureate Program was established in 1969 as the first program of its kind in the country. The program encourages diversity in health care professions by providing additional educational opportunities to those students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds.
The ceremony included remarks from Vice Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Donovan Roy, Ed.D.; School of Medicine Dean Wael Sakr, M.D.; and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics Anita Moncrease, M.D., who provided a brief history of the program.
In his remarks, Dr. Roy also recognized faculty, offices and staff who support the program before directly addressing each student participant in attendance, sharing memories and words of encouragement with each.
“For 10 months, these students have worked extremely hard,” he said. “Today is not the end. It is just the beginning of your journey. The goal is not to be a medical student. The goal is not to be a resident. The goal is to become a physician.”
