Dr. Herbert Smitherman elected to MSMS Board of Directors

Herbert Smitherman Jr., M.D., M.P.H., FACP, a professor of Internal Medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, was elected to the Michigan State Medical Society Board of Directors during the 159th annual meeting of the MSMS House of Delegates on April 23.

A graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Dr. Smitherman will serve a three-year term representing physicians from Wayne County.

The MSMS Board sets policies and oversees operations for the 15,000-member medical society headquartered in East Lansing.

Dr. Smitherman also serves as the president and chief executive officer of Health Centers Detroit Foundation Inc., a Federally Qualified Health Center Look-a-Like program operating three health centers in Detroit, and chief executive officer of the Michigan Area Health Education Center’s Southeast Regional Center.

The Michigan State Medical Society is the statewide professional association of 15,000 physicians and is affiliated with the American Medical Association. Physician policies on various issues involving public health, health care delivery and medical ethics are set at the annual MSMS House of Delegates meeting.
