Wayne Pediatrics, Detroit’s one-stop pediatric practice, will host its first College & Your Health workshop May 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 400 Mack Ave. in Detroit. The event aims to prepare metropolitan Detroit’s high school juniors and seniors for post-high school life from a health perspective.
The free workshop, which will include interactive sessions with Wayne Pediatrics physicians, will cover a range of topics surrounding health and college life. Sessions include young adult health, mental health, exercise and diet, campus safety, safe relationships and managing illness.
Attendees will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win one of two $500 scholarships, and will be given health resources and useful dorm items to take home. Wayne Pediatrics hopes College & Your Health will aid teenagers in their transition to healthy adults.
“Our goal for the workshop is to have a fun engaging day of learning that will provide information students can use to maintain their physical health and emotional wellbeing while at college,” said Professor of Pediatrics Sharon Marshall, M.D., a Wayne Pediatrics Adolescent Medicine physician. “The talks will be interactive and cover issues relevant to future college students.”
Melissa Thompson, director of WSU’s Department of Pediatrics and Wayne Pediatrics, believes the event exemplifies the practice’s mission. “This program is a testament to Wayne Pediatrics' commitment to developing the whole child. We want to ensure that they are equipped with the life skills to maintain a healthy body and mind throughout every stage of their life,” she said.
Students can sign up for the event at bit.ly/cayhregistration. High school juniors and seniors entering a trade school or a college other than Wayne State are welcome to attend.
